Product Description

From the Manufacturer
With Inventions, discover the "why" as well as the "how" common electronic components work through the use of everyday materials. Each project contributes to the understanding of how things work. The book has beautiful step-by-step, highly visual instructions and child appropriate materials, included in this kit, encourage independent learning through play, and lead a child successfully through each invention. Although Inventions is designed for children 8 years and up, this title has had an extraordinary history and following. It has been used at MIT to mentor high school students in physics. It has been used at U.C. Berkeley to mentor women in science. It has been used similarly at other institutions including Fermi Lab and the University of Texas at Austin. Inventions received a rave review from the Women's Society of the IEEE. They used Inventions for camp programs for elementary school students. The review boasted: "The projects actually WORK"....even for large groups where individualized attention is not possible. Inventions is compelling to children. Inventions is the recipient of over 15 unsolicited awards.

Client Reviews

My eight year old is entering his 1st science fair, therefore we have been experimenting with various possible projects. I bought him this kit for some tips. The experiments, and our outcomes:
1. Telegraph. This BARELY worked. By that, the paper clip telegraph clicker (which was supposed to 'tap' the head of a nail) hardly moved at all. No clicking, just a slight movement.
two. Light Flashing Generator. This appeared to be the simplest invention, and the one my son was most excited about. Yet, I was provided an incorrect component as the light bulb holder displayed in the directions looked Absolutely nothing like the one particular in the box, and there was no way to transfer electricity to it. Thus this did not work at all.
three. Radio. As with all the "inventions" I followed the instructions to a tee. We spent close to an hour putting this together exactly per the directions, and of course it did not function. Then once more, I actually did not consider we would make a radio out of toilet paper rolls and alumninum foil.
four. Motor. This one particular we essentially got to operate, and it was quite cool. Of course we had to deviate fairly a bit from the instructions to get it to perform.
The directions are sorely lacking. It is mainly photographs with directions that state, "Build the telegraph like this" pointing to the completely built telegraph (as an example).
If you are searching to acquire some science experiments for your child, I would not advise this at all. Rather I would go with the Mythbusters series, which truly function.

Although the age range for this kit is from eight to 80, I believed I'd try it for my highly intelligent, six year old who desires to be a scientist. Most likely not a very good idea for most. ..which I learned. This kit needs a lot of fine motor skills--which most 6 year olds have not completely acquired. I ended up getting to do most of the work. Also, if you do end up purchasing this, I'd suggest two points: 1)remember to twist the ends of your wires. I had to discover this on my own o( 2) constantly read ahead. The directions aren't written for step by step configurations. Extra than as soon as we had to take apart a thing due to the fact step two (or 3, or four, and so on)told us to do some thing unexpected. Also, we could not get every little thing to perform. . .even just after getting replacements.
On the bright side. . .My son completely loved the things that worked And even though he couldn't do the advanced items, he was certainly able to understand how the inventions work. Also, when I contacted the company, they gladly sent replacements.
I would nonetheless order from this firm because their science kits present a superb knowledge base for children, adults ( teachers).
